Approach

I have been teaching writing for more than fifteen years, in university classrooms, at public libraries, in community centre basements.

I don’t believe in universal principles in storytelling. My first step with any project is to get to the bottom of what it is about — its hidden premise, its heart, its grand comment on the human experience. Then, rather than applying prescriptive rules, we filter every choice through your story’s aboutness, to create a tightly woven story where every mote vibrates with its centripetal idea.

I work with any genre and anything narrative-based: novels, short stories, narrative nonfiction, screenplays, video games…

Manuscript consults$1,850 + HSTIncludes a full read of an 80,000 word manuscript, two video calls (three hours total), and a 5-10 page single-spaced feedback letter. One month turnaround.
Private classesfrom $200 + HST / hrIs there is a specific craft topic you’d like to learn? You tell me and I can design a one-off workshop for you. $200 + HST for the 1st hour and $100 + HST for each subsequent hour, max of 4 attendees.
